10. MOTHERS BACKS AND GUNNY SACKS (3:19) (mp3 audio clip)

it was a dreary afternoon
the sky began to bloom
into the color of grey
did i say it was afternoon?

and the ugly affirmations
stuffed inside my head
slammed up against the sheets of rain
in the time just after morning

when the birds should sing
and not worry
that winds will blow
their nests from trees
although the rain
i must admit
should help them get the worms

and all the people shuffling towards me
winding through is screwed up city
staring blindly at the sidewalk
as they count how many times
they crack their mothers back

as babies hatch in test tubes
in some freakin' quacks
big gunny sack way in the back
of his home laboratory
and the government
keeps finding ways
to give us longer working days
and ways to sell us nicotine
and patches for our eyes

the lesson here is self-decaying
he's rotted
right through from saying
it's a game that we're all playing
and i want to win...

not on your life
would it be wrong to say
that we are prone
with day to day blows to the face
that smart and ache
and they are hard to fake

you have to take some on the chin
scrape yourself off the floor
and try again
and then finally you may begin
to deal with your sins

the saving grace of the human race
is when the sky lights up a trace
after it's rained the way it is
here this afternoon

and we don't need the pot of gold
at the end of the road
we just need to see some
streaks of color
when we look into the sky

don't ask me why
but i know for a fact
that rainbows have a slippery back
and you can slide right down them
if you just take the time to try

it's like a circus ride
to save your life
from pain and misery and strife
so the next time you see a streak
why don't you stop and try
to slide away that pain and strife
and make yourself a better life
'cause dirty souls
are cleansed with grief
but not if done just for relief

the lesson here was self-decaying
please don't rot
right through from saying
it's a game that we're all playing
and i want to win...
