5. FLEAS TO FLIES (5:10) (mp3 audio clip)

in the hours just after sunrise
a dog awakens to realize
that the fleas he had
have all turned flies
like five or six times
their original size

the dog opens his mouth
in an effort to cry
but all the flies
immediately swarm inside
and as a tear forms
in the corner of his eye
he collapses, choking
and eventually dies

now i’m guessing that some of you
are probably wondering why
i’m telling you the story
of the poor dog who dies
and i don't know if i could explain
but if i really had to try
i guess it would have something to do
with not letting your fleas become flies

don't let your fleas become flies
donate, don't advertise

we're spoonfed
parential influence
and we're spoonfed
almost to an insult
what we should've did
is it our fault?
why don't you think it through
for yourself
what we could've did
it's not our fault
wait a minute
on second thought
i guess, maybe it is
if you never think it through
for yourself

i don't know if i could explain it…
do i really have to try?
